Memory Running High

Hi all,

I've been given a SQL Server instance to use in development. Nobody is using the server at all apart from me. What I am seeing is that it is using a heck of a lot of memory resource - just over 2GB - at all times, regadless of whether or not I am using it. This seems like much more than it should be using at this level of activity, and it feels like the server is slow and unresponsive when I log into it through remote desktop, although to be fair, network lag might be a factor. Is it something I should ask the corporate DBA to take a look at or is it basically to be expected?

Details of the setup are as follows:

It's a brand new instance on what I am pretty sure is a virtual server. 4GB RAM, Intel Xeon processor (2.7GHz), running on Windows Server 2008 R2 standard, Service Pack 1 (64GB). There's no pressure on disc space, and no other processes - apart from SQL Server - are using a surprising amount of RAM.

SQL Server 2012 (version 11.0.2100.60)

There are 4 databases (other than system). Three of the databases are empty and the other has 44GB of data in it and about 1MB of log files (I don't need any fancy restore capability for what I'm doing)

As I write there are about a dozen processes running in activity monitor, but none of them - apart from the one representing the activity monitor itself - is actually doing anything.

Minimum memory is set at 0MB, maximum to 2,147,483,647MB

Thanks

Colin
