In-Place Upgrade from SQL Server 2008 SP3 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition Not Upgrading Edition

Hello,

I'm running SQL Server 2008 SP3, Standard edition and trying to do an "upgrade in place" to SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition. The operating system is Windows 2008 R2 Standard, SP1.  After the "first pass" through the upgrade process I ended up with SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition (which I thought was odd since I'm using an Enterprise license key -- I had assumed it would upgrade me straight to Enterprise), and then I read that I have to run the setup again and choose Edition Upgrade to go from Standard to Enterprise. Anyway, after running Edition Upgrade on the new SQL Server 2012 installation it completed with no errors but I'm still left with SQL Server 2012 Standard edition (so it essentially did nothing). My company purchased enough Enterprise licenses to upgrade five of our servers, and I've successfully upgraded three of them to SQL Server 2012 Enterprise using the "side by side" method already, but we don't have enough storage on our SAN to do these last two "side by side" because the databases are quite large.

Any ideas?

Need to change Sql Server IP addresses

In a few months we will be moving to a new building. While our server names will remain the same the underling IP addresses will change (I am told). Currently our SQL Servers use static IP addresses like “172.x.y.x” but I’m not sure which octets will change as a result of the move.

Does Sql store the initial IP addresses internally in any table or somesuch so that changing the IP address could cause an issue with the server?

SQL Server - Azure Size

1.  Looking to create MS Azure SQL Server DB of 25 TB with 32 cores and 64 GB RAM. Is this possible?  It seems the Premium maximum is 500 GB DB size with 800 DTUS for one DB.

2.  How well does Sharding work with off the shelf software for integration into Microsoft Azure SQL Servers?

SQL SERVER 2012 Gives Error

I have installed Visual STudio 2010 SP1 and .NET framework 4.0 when  i install SQL SERVER 2012 management studio it gives error on installation and also when i run the ssms.exe the error is "cannot find one or more components please reinstall the app"

I have tried many ways install the visusal shell isolated and then repair the ssms 2012 but it did not work 

i also tried these methods

Start regedit.exe

• Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SQL Server Management Studio

• Delete 11.0_Config

• Restart ssms.exe

 
2- I also tried Uninstall Microsoft visual shell isolated and then Repair the ssms but this also did nto work
3-From the SQL Server DVD (or ISO) Run this:D:\redist\VisualStudioShell\VS10sp1-KB983509.msp  
none of them work for me

SQL 2012 Standard VM with more than 4 vCPUs

I've recently taken over administration of a SQL 2012 Standard server. This server has 8 cores(1 Core/socket) assigned to it via VMWare. While digging into the server I noticed that it was only making use of 4 of the 8 CPUs assigned to the server and found this message in the logs: 

SQL Server detected 8 sockets with 1 cores per socket and 1 logical processors per socket, 8 total logical processors; using 4 logical processors based on SQL Server licensing. This is an informational message; no user action is required.

After reviewing the licensing configurations for SQL 2012 servers I have become thoroughly confused. From Microsoft's official documentation I understand that Standard is limited to the lesser of 4 Sockets or 16 cores, unless it's a virtualized environment in which case it's based on the number of logical processors. In our current setup the number of logical processors appears as 8 but it is limiting SQL to the use of 4 of them.

Is there any way to have SQL make use of the remaining logical processors?

Would this an upgrade to SQL 2012 Enterprise be the only fix?

My company doesn't allow using Local Service / Network Service accounts for SQL Server. So I created domain service accounts. Can multiple SQL Server installations use the same domain service accounts ?

SQL2K14 Product Update Functionality (for Service Pack 1)

I'd like to slipstream SP1 for W2K14, so I'll only need to perform one installation for each instance. I've done SQL2K8+SP1 slipstreams, and to prepare the slipstream  I'm required to unpack the service pack and blend its files with those of the RTM, and end up using mostly the files of the service pack.

With SQL2K14, when I run the setup program against "SQLServer2014SP1-KB3058865-x64-ENU.exe"  I'm not shown an option to /extract.  Nevertheless, the files are unpacked for me, into a temp directory, and I can copy them out to a folder whose name I could use on the 'setup.exe' command line, like this: 

D:\setup.exe /Action=Install /UpdateSource=C:\AllUpdatesFolder

If it's not legal to unpack the files from inside the .exe file, can I specify the folder containing the .exe on the command line, above, as the value of /uupdatesource=    ?

Only SSRS(Reporing services ) will install on a separate server and other all remaining  services(out of SSRS) to another server with same configuration

Move MS SQL2005 Db to MS SQL2012 using detach/attach

I need to move a database from a Win2008R2 server running MS-SQL 2005 to another server running Win2012R2/MS-SQL2012.
Can I simply do a detach from the old server and an attach on the new server? If so, does this process also handle the log files?

Hi

I installed Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 including Microsoft SQL 2014 Express (x64). I told that installation to use the standard SQL Server instance name for SQL Server, not the one suggested by the installation program. NAV is running and has access to its demo database on that server.

Then I attempted to install SQL Server Management Studio on the same machine (Win 7 Pro SP1). This comes to a halt on the page "Feature Selection" with the following error:

The specified directory path, "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft SQL Server\", for the INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR parameter is a relative path. However, the directory path must be an absolute path. Specify an absolute path.

Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SetupExtension.RelativeDirPathException: The specified directory path, "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft SQL Server\", for the INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR parameter is a relative path. However, the directory path must be an absolute path. Specify an absolute path.

Obviously, the setup is not capable of handling the environment variable, which is set to its standard,

ProgramFiles(x86)=C:\Program Files (x86)

which clearly is an absolute path.

How do fix this problem, so I can install SQL Server Management Studio, since the control to change the path is disabled?

installed 2 windows vista home edition

Please help me! I accidently installed 2 win vista home edition on the same PC. This is my sons computer and he is going to kill me if I do not get it resolved before he finds out. I continue to get the message Low Disk Space on the REcovery C: Drive. The second installation I am assuming went to the D: Drive. I see both C and D but am not sure which one to delete or what to do. I would greatly appreciate the knowledge of the experts to guide me through this, so that I can atleast enjoy a few more years of life! I am somewhat computer savy if given step by step instructions.

Error Installing SQL Server 2012 Express

Like many others, I've problems installing SQL Server 2012 Express. 

I get the error, as in the capture below. I've searched alot, and found many possible solutions. Mostly not directly related to my problem, but to similar error during setup. 

I've tried:

  • Uninstalling everyting related to SQL Server (express)
  • Removed Registry items related to SQL
  • Removed complete folder related to SQL 

The system I used is a POS system, with POSReady 7 installed. Strange thing, I've installed exactly the same system a week ago, without any problems.

Hope someone can help me, I'm a bit lost.

Failed to upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 Express

Hi,
   I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 using the command line argument. Am facing the below error.
Message: Unable to retrieve a public configuration object type Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SSIS.SSISConfigurationPublic for setting ISSVCACCOUNT.

I got error message after installing Shared Features Distributed Replay Controller and Distributed Reply Client. Displayed message :

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer AX_SqlServerController using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID      e68 (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Tools\DReplayClient\DReplayClient.exe). How to resolve this issue?. Thanks

Is it okay to Upgrade a sql server 2005 to 2014 directly ??

Or do I need to upgrade it to 2008 & 2012 first ??

If no, then can I upgrade sql server 2008 to 2014 directly ?? Please advice. Thanks.

Implementation of Resource Governor

Hi Community,

I have an sql 2014 enterprise environment that runs multiple database that are owned by different departments and applications running under the same instance.  We had recently a number of issues where a small number of databases consume all of the available resources on the server which as a result,  negatively effect all the other databases.

I have done some reading on Resource Governor and it seems that although it is not possible to limit resource per database,  it is possible to limit by user.  The idea is to have each user limited to let say 20% or the available resource.  My main concern is the actual implementation as there are quite a large number of users which will make the setting up and the maintenance of the feature a nightmare.

Is it possible to set up a single and global rule to limit the resource allocation? 

or are there any scripts available to set up the Resource Pools by importing data from a csv.  The idea would be to export the AD users from active directory to csv and then use it to create a Resource Pool for each user.

Can I Install SQL Server 2014 Standard on a SBS 2011 Server?

We have a customer who is running a single SBS2011 Server.
Their sharepoint database has become to big for the SQL-Express server that was setup with SBS 2011 out of the box.

Is it possible to install SQL 2014 Standard on this server so that we can then move the database into SQL STD?
