Upgrade SQL 2008 Management Studio to SQL 2014 Management Studio?

$

Hello is it true that you can't upgrade SQL 2008 Management Studio (only) to 2014 in that SQL 2014 Management Studio will be installed side by side? If yes is it simply running SQL 2014 setup and step through & select only Management Studio components (will the destination path need to be changed?) or something else?

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Service Pack upgrade Successful But Product level from SSMS shows older version

Hi Techies,

Recently we have upgraded service pack of SQL server 2008R2 from SP1 to SP3 and the upgrade was successful. Post upgrade we have restarted the Windows box as per the pop up that we got.

After the server came back online we connected to SSMS and queried the product level and surprisingly it still shows older version (10.50.4000)

I have checked the registry keys for 'current version' and 'setup' in regedit and they all show up the new version which is of SP3 (10.50.6000.34)

We have two SQL server 2012 and one SQL server 2008R2 stand alone instances on the same box. SQL server 2012 upgrade was successful and SSMS shows the latest SP and Version.

Unfortunately the upgrade was done in March 2015 and we do not have any error logs of SQL server. Still we have summary.txt and all the related upgrade logs.

Can someone help on fixing this.

I'm trying to install a hotfix for SQL Server 2008 SP1 on my Windows  server 2008 . When running the hotfix I keep on getting the following error message:

TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair during configuration for features [SQL_BooksOnline_Redist,]. In order to apply this patch package (KB970315), you must resolve any issues with the previous operation that failed. View the summary.txt log to determine why the previous operation failed.

Error code 0x84B20001.

Anyone has any idea why I'm receiving this error?

Product: Microsoft Application Error Reporting -- Installation failed. Errors 1708 and 1709

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit is giving me trouble installing applications from msi. I originally am trying to install SQL Server 2014 Express but it errors on Windows Application Error Reporting application and other components required. As result, I tried to install the components individually but get same error. I am using local 'Administrator' account and still using the Run As Administrator for the Command Prompt.  From elevated Command Prompt, the following log is displayed after running   'msiexec /i dw20shared.msi /lv Log.txt

Any ideas?      No antivirus is installed, UAC is disabled, Windows Updates are current, and no other issues discovered with the server.

SQL Server Failures

Please refer to my other post: Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 4 - Completely crashing

The issue resolved itself, but basically TFS appeared to have triggered a state where SQL Server was unusable to the point an Administrator couldn't even restart the SQL services, and no one could connect to any of the databases.  We had to restart the server, and connectivity was available for a short while before the issue reoccurred.  All event logs related to TFS point to the fact it couldn't connect to the database, I couldn't find any indication as to why SQL Server went into that state.

Can you please help me troubleshoot what actually caused the issue (via my SQL Logs or Windows logs) so I can prevent it from happening again?  What would you like for me to share?

Thanks, Jibba

Hello,

I have a SQL Server install that is 2008 R2 SP3 Standard Edition.  I want to install another instance, but I all I have is the complete install package for 2008 R2 SP2.  So, when I run the install package for SP3, the install says its the wrong version and can't continue.

How to install an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition, when you don't have the install? Where can I get a complete install package with SP3 included for 2008 R2 Standard Edition?

Thanks

multiple instances on sql server 2005 with different machinename

Hello, please help. I am stuck at the last step of migration from old cluster to one single VMWare. I was able to migrate and restore everything, and the last step I needed to rename the sql instance to make it the same. I was not able to do so! I tried to drop and add server, it was successful, and @@servername returns me the desired name, however, it still displays as old one on MS SQL Management Studio in Object Explorer, and I cannot get rid of it.

SELECT

SERVERPROPERTY('MachineName') returns me old name,

and my instance in Object Explorer looks like 'PR_OLD_NAME\OLD_NAME', even though @@servername returns 'PR_NEW_NAME\NEW_NAME'. SO, after trying a lot of different options, I decided to reinstall and add new instance with the right name, and do all the restores again. However, I cannot add the same name as I want, because it is limited to 16 characters, and my machinename in servername always shows as old one! So, I reinstalled it, and added the name I wanted, however, since it does prefix with the machine name, it does not give me desired result. Since I need multiple sql instances with similar scenario, I do not want to rename machine, because it will be changed for all other instances, right??? I don't understand how our original sql environment has multiple sql instances on the same machine with different names, something like 'SERVER1\sqldata', 'SERVER2\sqltext2', 'SERVER3\somethingelse'. I need to migrate it with the exact names as it has now... Any thoughts?

Sqlserver Express version 12.0

I installed Sqlserver Express 2014 about a year ago on my desktop (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) and it installed

MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS. I just now downloaded and installed Sqlserver Express 2014 on my laptop

(Win 7 Pro 32 bit) and it installed only MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS, making the databases on my desktop

incompatible with SQLEXPRESS on my laptop. Is MSSQL12 no longer allowed in SQLserver Express?

Or is there a way to download it or upgrade to version 12? Otherwise I will have to recreate my databases

on my desktop to version 11  so the two machines can keep the databases in sync.

Thanks in advance for advice.
