Migrating and adding tempdb files

$

Hi,

I'm in the process of migrating tempdb to a new, dedicated drive. In current state, the SQL Server instance has one tempdb data file. Per best practices, I would like to add three (3) additional tempdb data files while also migrating to the new drive.

My questions are:

  • If the allocated space is 100 GB and I wanted to add 4 tempdb files to that drive, should they all be of equal size (25 GB max)?
  • Do I add the tempdb files first (of 25 GB each) to the new drive and then migrate the existing tempdb file? Or, should it be reverse (first migrate then add)?

I'm fairly new to SQL Server maintenance and improvements and any and all help is appreciated!

David

Still no success installing SQL Server ... despite all your help and suggestkions

After all the ideas and help from here and almost 4 hours with a Dell technician, I'm no closer to success.

We went through all the suggested solutions involving registry edits/deletions that I could find. We still come up with "Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keys" failure. There are a series of SQL Server keys (HKEY/LOCAL/Software) that we can see but we are prohibited from deleting.

I want to call Microsoft. Is there a special SQL Server phone #?

SQL Server 2014 Express 64bit Missing DLL

Hello,

I am trying to install SQL Server 2014 Express with advanced services on a windows 7 sp1 machine.  While running the installation file I downloaded from MSDN, I received a failure warning stating there is a DLL missing.  I had a similar experience with SQL Ser2012 and was never able to install it.

SQL Server Service Packs (2008, 2008R2, 2012)

Hi all,

it appears that no one took care of installing Service Packs for our SQL Servers from WSUS and now i have to do it. What i have:

MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1

MS SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1,2,3

MS SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1,2

As you could see some of them a really old.

1. The fact that everything is running so far without any problems and complains bring the question: Do I have to install Service Packs?

2. Is it ok if I go directly to the latest Service Pack for each Server or i have to go the "entire road" installing one after another.

3. What is the best way to do the updates: Install all other security and critical updates, restart the server, then install the service pack and restart again the server.

Actually my knowledge for SQL Server and Updates for it are not so big that's why i want to apologies for the stupid questions. Thanks in advance

Running SQL Server 2012 Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2008 R2 SSIS instance got the following errors all pointing to the data collector/MDW packages deployed under SSIS instance. first error is shown as critical the second one as warning. how to upgrade the dc packages in 2008 R2 SSIS instances to 2012, or the next 2 errors can be neglected?

SQL Server Integration Services PostUpgrade
Recompile third-party and custom components to work with SQL Server 2012. In SQL Server 2012, Integration Services has changed its application programming interfaces (APIs). To be compatible with these new APIs, all third-party and custom components may need to be recompiled. SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 components can use assembly binding redirection to continue working in SQL Server 2012. SQL Server 2005 components may require additional code changes to work with SQL Server 2012. Package Name: TSQLQuery_ServerName_MSSQL10_50_MSSQLSERVER_{GUID}_3_Collect

as well as

SQL Server Integration Services PostMigration
Update provider names in connection strings to be compatible with SQL Server 2012.In SQL Server 2012, connection strings require a different value for some provider names. The value for the SQL Server Native Client provider is now SQLNCLI11. The value for the OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services is now MSOLAP.5. To automatically update these provider names, use the Package Upgrade tool to upgrade SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 packages. You can also manually update these names in Business Intelligence Development Studio.

List all instances and databases on a given server

I want to list all instances on a given server. Also I want to list all databases in a given server.

When I login through SSMS unless I specify the SQL Server instance I am unable to see all the databases.

Example:- SSMS->MSZIMBA01 ( I can see only system tables why is that ?)

SSMS->MSZIMBA01\DEV1 ( I can see the databases in dev 1)

Suppose it has 10 other dev instances how to list all of them . Thanks for your answer in advance.

Unable to connect to SQL server once joined to Windows domain

Hi,

I'm currently building some SQL Server 2014 Enterprise VM's in Azure (using powershell) using the latest SQL server image available.  My issue is that when the VM isn't joined to a Windows domain I am able to connect to SQL server through SSMS (using the local Windows account), however as soon as I join the VM to the Windows domain I am unable to connect to it due to security. If I try and use the previous credentials these also fail.

SQL is configured for Windows authentication only.

My question is, how do I configure SQL server to grant permissions to Windows accounts so that I can access SQL straight away?

I've tried executing the commands below, but they fail.

PS C:\Scripts> Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInstance localhost
Invoke-SqlCmd : Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\Marcus'.
At line:1 char:1+ Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInst ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [Invoke-Sqlcmd], SqlException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : SqlExectionError,Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.PowerShell.GetScriptCommand

Invoke-SqlCmd :
At line:1 char:1
+ Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInst ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : ParserError: (:) [Invoke-Sqlcmd], ParserException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : ExecutionFailureException,Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.PowerShell.GetScriptCommand

PS SQLSERVER:\>

Checking the SQL error log shows the following:

2014-10-28 11:32:41.72 Logon       Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5.
2014-10-28 11:32:41.72 Logon       Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\Marcus'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

Can anyone point me in the right direction? SQL Server isn't my speciality.

Is it supported to install SQL Server 2008 R2 after SQL Server 2012 has been installed?

$

Is it supported to install an earlier version of SQL Server (2008 R2 in my case) after a newer version (2012) has already been installed?

The documentation says that you can install SQL Server on a server where an earlier version has already been installed:

"You can also upgrade earlier versions of SQL Server, or install SQL Server on a computer where earlier SQL Server versions are already installed."

However, I want to do the opposite. Is this supported?

Try to add features with an existing installation

Hi,
We use SQL Server 2012 sp1.
We want to install a feature that we did not install the first time.
So we run the "SQL Server Installation Center" from our server.
At the step "Setup Support Rules", we received this error:

Rule "consistency validation for sql server registry keys" failed.
The SQL Server registry keys from a prior installation cannot be modified.
To continue, see SQL Server Setup documentation about how to fix registry keys.

Do you have an idea how to fix that ?

Finalizing SQL Server 2012 SP2 update

$

Hi,

I just successfully upgraded SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition from SP1 CU8 to SP2.

Here is the actual portrait I have in my control panel (Installed programs + version):

Version changed after SP2 update (through Windows Update):

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB                          11.2.5058.0

        Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptDom              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Compiler Service    11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client                                11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Policies                                         11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English)                            11.2.5058.0
Microsoft VSS Writer for SQL Server 2012                              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Browser for SQL Server 2012                               11.2.5058.0

Version changed only after installing corresponding Features Pack component:

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Language Service              11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Report Builder 3 for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects                   11.2.5058.0

      Version did not change:

Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types                                10.51.2500.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework            11.1.2902.0

My questions:

1. Am I missing any components update or is my actual SP2 setup OK?

2. Even if I tried to install DACFramework SP2 Feature pack by running corresponding installer, it told me that I had an higher version...  Does any of you have a different version number for this component?

3. I actually have SSDT for VS2010 installed.  The corresponding versions I actually have are the following:

Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010                                  10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu                                  10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu             10.3.31009.2

Should I consider upgrading any component so they work with SQL 2012 SP2 properly?  If so, could someone provide me the corresponding download/webpage links?

4. Finally, should I upgrade to CU2 which is actually available. Among other problems, I notice that it should fix an index rebuild problem.  Any other major issues it targets?  Is there any easy way I can test if I should install this update or not?

Thanks for helping.

Hi Guys...

I am abit confused with the latest SQL Server processor licensing and this Core Factor Table.

Am thinking of putting in a new SQL Server on a HP Server with a single Intel® Xeon® E5-2407 v2 (4 core, 2.4 GHz, 10MB, 80W) Processor. How many of the (SQLSvrStdCore 2014 SNGL MVL 2Lic CoreLic) licenses would I need to purchase for the above Server ? Will not be virtualised.

Also with this license am I entitled to use SQL Server 2008r2 instead on this Server ?

Thanks

MS SQL Server 2012 SP2 post-installation error

Hi all,

Windows update gave me an option to install updates for my MS SQL Server 2012. One was the SP1 and the other was the SP2. During that time i selected both but in the end the update for 'Security Update for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 (KB2977326)' failed and the update for 'Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 (KB2958429)' succeeded.

What i saw then when I run management studio and did a select top 100 rows command on a table I got the below error:

An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Method not found: 'System.String Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Util.BytesToHexString(Byte[], Int32)'.

This happens only for select statements. Edit and all other works fine. Does anybody know about this issue?

Thanks for you time. :)

Noob with TDE encryption problem

I'm not a SQL guy, but I was tasked with creating a TDE instance on a dev server a few months ago.

I created the new instance and ran

USE master;
GO
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'asdfasdfasdfare23rfyf89werf9fer8c9c8wer9ch89ch9sds';
go
CREATE CERTIFICATE MyServerCertificate WITH SUBJECT = 'My Certificate';
go

USE MyDatabaseName;
GO
CREATE DATABASE ENCRYPTION KEY WITH ALGORITHM = AES_128 ENCRYPTION BY SERVER CERTIFICATE MyServerSCertificate;
GO
ALTER DATABASE [MyDatabaseName] SET ENCRYPTION ON;
GO

--Warning: The certificate used for encrypting the database encryption key has not been backed up. You should immediately back up the certificate and the private key associated with the certificate. If the certificate ever becomes unavailable or if you must restore or attach the database on another server, you must have backups of both the certificate and the private key or you will not be able to open the database.
OPEN MASTER KEY DECRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '23987hxJKL969#ghf0%94467GRkjg5k3fd117r$$#1946kcj$n44nhdlj'
BACKUP MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'C:\Projects\SQL\My_Exported_MasterKey'
       ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'ThisIsMyPa55word!';
GO

Everything went fine, the db is encrypted. I've since been told that we're going to move the db to production, and I'm unable to find the certificate or key.

What can I do?

Hi,

Can I get an outline/tutorial to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or a suitable link to help accomplish same? It will be installed on Windows Server 2012 R2. I would like info relating to clustering/replication seeing the servers are 2 identical servers.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

I am getting the error "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation" on windows 8.1 while installing SQL server 2008.

The specific error is The error is Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation." at stepSqlBrowserConfigAction_install_ConfigNonRC_Cpu32 .

I have tried everything from copying to the C drive. I am the admin on the machine. I also checked access in registry. It already has acesss to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\security

Can someone comment on how to resolve this issue. I also tried NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM but getting the same error.

Any help would be appreciated.
