DHCP Question : For the lack of Forum Category, I am using IT Management, please move appropriately..
Hi All,
I have inherited a DHCP service running Windows 2008, 6.1.7600, and it has several hundreds of /28 scopes defined there. It was required when an Application was first designed and implemented several years back. Now, with fewer such /28 subnets needed, I have to consolidate/reduce them to just less than 100 or so.
Here are my questions.
1. How can I extract which of these scopes do not have any reservations at all?
2. How can I disable, not remove yet, those unused scopes? The application can grab any of those unused scopes and assign them to a user. My idea is to block many of those unused scopes and return the IPs back to my network team for repurposing.
This will be an ongoing process for the next couple of months, any pointer is appreciated.
Thanks

In-place upgrade - SQL server 2014 not recognizing existing SQL2008R2
Hi,
I am facing an issue with in-place upgrade of SQL2008R2 Enterprise edition to SQL2014 Enterprise edition. I have outlined the steps where I am stuck, request to all to help with my situation ....
There is only default instance on the server.
- The SQL2008R2 SP1 has been upgraded using in-place procedure to SQL2014.
- Then SQL2014 has been uninstalled completely .
- SQL2008R2 SP1 has been installed and configured. Restored all the databases and applications are tested.
- After 6 weeks , I am now doing the in-place upgrade to SQL2014 (same edition). But the upgrade doesn't recognize the DB Engine, SSAS,SSRS. It only shows me the shared components (Management tools, Client tools connectivity, etc).
At this time I am stuck to see how I can make this work....anybody who had faced similar issues please provide your advise....
Thanks

Can't install SQL Express 2014 on a virtualized Win 8.1 vm
Context: Creating an installation package for a windows app that uses SQL Express. Using WIX. In general, the WIX setup files are working, just the SQL install failed so I fell back to running the .msi directly and that also fails.
I have the same error as in this forum post: How do I install SQL Express 2014 LocalDB on Windows 8.1? The answers on that post have not led me to the issue and I haven't really made any headway on other forums. The error message is:
"Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system. For information on supported configurations, see the product documentation."
The installation target is a Hyper-V guest machine as follows: 2G RAM, 14.5 GB free on the C: drive, 2.5 GHz CPU. I turned .NET 3.5 on.
I used a .msi file from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299 and selected "LocalDB 32BIT\SqlLocalDB.msi".
I have a hard time believing it's not supported on a VM since that is such a logical place to test applications using SQL express.
One of my problems is not even seeing a log file. The location in Program files doesn't exist and I don't know where else to look.
Update after initial post: So this link suggests SQL Express 2014 won't work in virtualized machines other than on servers, but I'm assuming that limitation is for the Hyper-V host, not the guests. Also, at the Microsoft link above I downloaded this install file, Express 32BIT\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe, and that worked just fine, including from within the WIX install package as part of the install chain/bundle. so clearly SQL Express works just fine. But that's not what we would want to use for an end user is it? Don't we just want the light-weight LocalDB package? So I think I've isolated my real question as stated above, why doesn't the simple SQL 2014 Express LocalDB .msi file install?
And with regard to virtualization, isn't testing apps on VM's the desired and acceptable practice?

The Detail.txt file has this:
(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:58 Slp: Error: Action "Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.ScoExtension.StopServiceAction" threw an exception during execution.(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:59 Slp: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionExecutionException: Failed to start service MSSQLSERVER. ---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.ScoExtension.ExecuteStopServiceFailedException: Failed to start service MSSQLSERVER. ---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.Sco.ScoException: A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.
(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:59 Slp: ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.
As far as I can tell, SQL Server is running fine, but these errors consume a lot of space. We do not use replication or fulltext.
Where should I look to fix this problem?

Suggest Quorum Configuration for High Availability Group
I'm wondering if someone could please give me some advice regarding the Quorum configuration for my High Availability group. We have 3 sites across the UK, with users for a particular system at each site. This system has a SQL Database at it's core. Our primary site has two separate buildings, 100m apart, but with fibre channel connections between. I have a SQL Server in each of these buildings, and one at one of the remote sites. All servers are running Windows 2012R2 & SQL 2014. I've created an availability group with synchronous commit between the two buildings at the primary site, and asynchronous commit to the remote. Network connectivity between sites rarely goes down as it causes the business significant problems. Currently all nodes have a quorum vote, for a total of 3 votes - an odd number as per best practice. However, Kendra Little from Brent Ozar Ltd., says we should always have a file share witness, and details a similar situation to mine, but with unreliable network connectivity offsite.
I could add a file share witness, and remove the vote from the remote site node, but that file share would be in one of the buildings in the primary site. If we lose that building (or it's network), automatic failover wouldn't work.
I could add 2 file share witnesses (one in each building), and leave the remote site node with a vote, to give 5 votes. Or even add file share witnesses at remote sites (but this seems a bad idea).
Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I'm currently leaning towards leaving things as is. The system's application servers will reside in one building at the primary site, but I'm planning on using Veeam to give them resilience.
Many thanks,
Pete Cousins
SQL Server 2014 installation freezes
Hello,
I'm trying to install SQL Server 2014 from the CD provided through my MSDN subscription.
I launch the wizard, which completes all steps until the "Installation Progress" step (the one before last) .
In this step, the program freezes at the following action: "Install_sql_common_core_Cpu64_Action : Write_NativeImages_64 : Generating Native Images".
Help ! What should I do ??

Help Viewer 1.1 repair after SQL 2014 installation
I am seeking assistance installing or repairing HelpViewer 1.1 installed with SQL Server 2014.
I receive the following error when choosing “I want to use local settings” option from Help Library Manager,
This page can’t be displayed
- Make sure the web address http://127.0.0.1:47873 is correct
- Look for the page with your search engine
- Refresh the page in a few minutes
I attempted repairing the help viewer by executing the installation file found at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Help Viewer\v1.0\Microsoft Help Viewer 1.1\install.exe
and choosing the REPAIR option. The repair function completes; however, the error remains.
I examined the SQL 2014 installation disc and found nothing useful under the Maintenance/ Repair topic. I really do not look forward to a complete reinstall of SQL server and components so I may use local help files.
Please, anyone with insight or suggestions, I am happy the hear from you.
Thanks

Coexistance between Failover cluster SQL 2008 R2 and High availability SQL Server 2012
Hi,
would it be possible for the same boxes holding a SQL Server 2008 cluster machine to be part of High Availability for SQL Server 2012 ??
Thank you,
There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer
I am getting this message and have SP1 installed. Here is the results of SELECT @@version from my MSSMS:
(No column name)
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.5343.0 (X64)

Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
The version is higher than SP1, however the last line displays Service Pack 1. Any ideas on why it won't install SP2?
Many thanks,

Send mail from SQL: permission denied
I have a trigger like this:
ALTER trigger [dbo].[TR_AlertOnConnection] on [dbo].[Log] with execute as owner for insert
In the trigger, the sp_send_dbmail is called to send an email. When a row is insterted in the table, I get an error:
The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_send_dbmail', database 'msdb', schema 'dbo'.
I understand that I the user must be a member of DatabaseMailUserRole in order to send mail. But... since I execute the trigger "as
owner", which user I have to put in this group?
Windows Server and MSSQL DB upgrade query
We have MSSQL 2008 R2 SP2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit). We want to upgrade the OS to 2012 R2 and MSSQL to 2014. Can this be done? and if yes then which one from the below options are recommended?
a. Upgrade the DB to 2014 first and then upgrade the OS
b. Upgrade the OS to 2012 R2 first and then the DB
